In his interview with Vulture, Marshall Mathers, more commonly known as Eminem, unloads a lot. Like, how much he hates Donald Trump (“I get almost flustered thinking about him”); how, despite being from Detroit, he “didn’t really believe that cops could be planting evidence or shooting unarmed black people” until seeing all the evidence fairly recently; and how he “maybe” took the misogyny in his rap lyrics “too far sometimes.”
Oh, and apparently dating has been kind of trash.
On whether he dates, the 45-year-old divorced father (he and Kim Mathers split in 2001) said, “It’s tough. Since my divorce, I’ve had a few dates and nothing’s panned out in a way that I wanted to make it public.”
He added, “Dating’s just not where I’m at lately.”
Given the scope of Mathers’ work—his virulently misogynistic lyrics and the fact that his ex said he nearly drove her to suicide—that’s maybe not such a bad thing!
The interviewer then joked with Mathers about meeting dates on Tinder, only to have the rapper confirm that, yeah, he actually did use the app.
“Yeah, Tinder ... and Grindr. I also used to go to strip clubs.”
(Sidenote: This caught me off-guard when I first read the Q&A. It appears the Grindr reference is a joke. The interviewer, David Marchese, never follows up on the comment, but in a later question about Mathers’ homophobia, Mathers says he doesn’t “swing that way.” Marchese did follow up about the strip clubs, though, which leads us to ... )
“What can I say?” Mathers added, “Going to strip clubs is how I was meeting some chicks. It was an interesting time for me.”
I’m not trying to kink-shame, and maybe middle-aged, blue-eyed rappers with a penchant for diamond-encrusted cock rings (yes, that’s in the interview, too) is your thing. More power to you!
But as for me and my house, if I’m perusing Tinder and see the dude who once rapped about taking his daughter to dispose of her mother’s dead body ... it’s a swipe left for me, dog.
