Students on the basketball team at Iowa’s Perry High School found themselves targeted by a very peculiar chant during a Monday-night game against the Dallas Center-Grimes Community High School team, WHO-TV reports.
Fans of the opposing school reportedly used Donald Trump’s scorn for undocumented immigrants, openly chanting the 2016 Republican presidential candidate’s name, along with “USA,” in an apparent attempt to intimidate the diverse team.
“We are all aware of racism; it’s alive and well in small portions, but it’s alive and well, and it’s just hurtful to see that’s what they resort to,” Perry student-section leader Kevin Lopez told the news station.
Perry High School, which boasts a 48-percent-minority student population, has a basketball team made up of players of Latino, Native American and African-American descent.
“It’s honestly disrespectful. That’s how I take it. I hear it during the game, on and off the court. Everywhere I go,” Perry senior Shammond Ivory said. “As soon as I hear something like that, it just triggers me and it makes me strive for more and to do it for my team, coaches and my community."
