It’s been almost 12 years since the crew from Calvin’s Barbershop got together to make laughs. But the upcoming movie reuniting Ice Cube and Cedric the Entertainer, Barbershop: The Next Cut, also takes a look at gang violence in Chicago.

In The Next Cut, Calvin (Ice Cube) attempts to bring the community together and save his shop at the same time. His neighborhood has been plagued with violence, and he has not only his son to worry about but also his new employees. Joining Ice Cube in the newest film are Common, Nicki Minaj, Anthony Anderson, Regina Hall and J.B. Smoove.

The movie is directed by Malcolm D. Lee and in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lee spoke about the parallels it has with present-day Chicago.

“The overarching story deals with some of the gang violence in Chicago; specifically, Ice Cube’s son is being lured by the gangs because he’s a high-profile basketball player,” Lee said. “It really reminded me a lot of Boyz n the Hood. It’s ironic that Ice Cube is in the Furious Styles role that Laurence Fishburne played back in the day.”

The film opens in theaters April 15.
