'Awkward Black Girl': Shorty Award and Racism

The Shorty Awards recognize the best short content produced for social media, and the popular Web series Awkward Black Girl took home the top award in its category this year. Creator Issa Rae and the rest of the team were no doubt thrilled. Fans who don't like black people (or don't like black social media content, or don't like black people to win things — we're not exactly sure what their issue was) felt differently.

Clutch magazine collected some of their explicitly racist tweets in response to the award, including calling Rae a "ni—erette" and protesting, "Of course the black one wins. F—- the Shorty Awards."

Handling the backlash with characteristic humor, Rae tweeted in response, "Racists haaaaaate me, I'm on my OJ. #ABGNation."
