Earlier in May, rumors surfaced that Marvel was eyeing Ava DuVernay to direct the new Black Panther movie; and now, according to MCU Exchange, it’s actually going to happen, allegedly.

According to MCU, DuVernay has signed on as director of Black Panther, which will star Get on Up’s Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, the prince of Wakanda, who must take over his father’s throne and avenge his death.

It sounds as though DuVernay will have her hands full, since she’s admitted that she’s not at all familiar with the Marvel Comics universe. “I’m not a big comic book fan,” said DuVernay, “but I know that I love to deconstruct heroes, deconstruct myths.”

The fact that DuVernay could possibly become Marvel’s first black and first female director of its first movie with a solo lead of color would not only be historic but also groundbreaking.
