It is not about alienating Russia, actually. Putin has shown a clear disdain for international norms, such as invading Ukraine, menacing the Baltics and Poland. It would be one thing if Putin wanted to respect their neighbors’ autonomy, but they do not.

I am not sure if I consider myself to be conservative or liberal. I think my experience of growing in Detroit as a black person, per my points in my post, makes me look at security in ways most defense writers would not consider. I think that our personal views always influence our journalism and they should.
