The accent is neither here nor there, not terrible, but not especially sexy either. His voice quality definitely adds to it though. Then again, I'm just partial to bass and baritone voices.

I don't think anybody has ever forgiven her for taking the part of Dorothy in The Wiz (the movie version) from Stephanie Mills, who performed the part on Broadway, and was in the correct actual age range for the part. And who was, IMHO, a better singer.

Her first album was released in 1985. I remember the videos being all we discussed in Jr. High School (Yes. I am an OLD!), and I remember her albums being the soundtrack to my high school years and early adulthood. She was quite popular all through the 90s as well, so you weren't off at all.
