As someone who worked in the Cleo Thomas campaign I can say the Machine was a monster. They promised my fraternity a certain number of seats in student government if they would vote as a block and vote for the Machine candidates. Cleo didn’t run as the first black man he ran to crush the Machine by organizing the

When we were in school (2001), The Machine members were threatening my then-girldriend (now wife) because she was running the campaign of a candidate running against “their” guy.

Are we sure “The Machine” isn’t overstating its own relevance? That’s a university of almost 38,000 kids. How much influence could they really have?

That tone-deaf ad was bad enough but then thanking that “pimp turned misogynistic purveyor of black history” (perfect description of him) was the end of the road for them. My teenaged nieces patiently sat through several videos (since one of the MTV channels did a Prince marathon and my brothers and I were glued to

I was lucky enough to see Prince live three times. Each was completely different.

Beautiful. I loved Prince too. And really he’s still out here making us poor lol. I’m still buying stuff.

Ferguson specifically moved their city official elections to weird time/day/places so that they could freeze out the black vote. It isn’t really an excuse for poor turnout (you need to show the fuck up and vote regardless), but it is why these positions tend to remain white and unaffected by change.
