George Zimmerman’s ex-girlfriend, 28-year-old Brittany Brunelle, is backpedaling from her accusation that her former beau threw a wine bottle at her, the Associated Press reports. As a result, Phil Archer, a Florida state attorney, said that he is no longer pursuing an aggravated assault case against Zimmerman, since his accuser has recanted her story and is no longer cooperating with investigators.

Zimmerman, 31, gained notoriety in 2012 for the fatal shooting of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla.

In a statement released to the press, Archer explained why his office would be discontinuing its assault case against Zimmerman: “While it is clear that the officers had probable cause to arrest Mr. Zimmerman … the subsequent recantation by the victim of her initial statement … precludes my office from proceeding further.”

Three days after police arrested Zimmerman for the assault, Brunelle asked that no charges be brought against her estranged lover. She said that she was not being coerced or bribed by anyone to recant her accusations.
