Aspartame is a controversial food additive that is used in food products as an artificial sweetner. It was originally listed by the Pentagon as a bilogical warfare agent. The release of the additive was highly contested before the Food and Drug Administration approved it 30 years ago. It has undergone several name changes, some say as a strategy to distance itself from the controversy. It is currently being marketed as AminoSweet, NutraSweet and Canderel. The use of Aspartame has been linked to a number of ailments, including multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, birth defects and lupus. We could go on, but we'll stop. Aspartame by any other name is still aspartame.
