As the World Turns has nothing on former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his shenanigans. NewsOne is reporting that more than a decade ago, Schwarzenegger had an affair with a household staffer that resulted in a baby, which the household staffer, who is married, kept. Schwarzenegger kept the household staffer, who retired in January after 20 years of service. Schwarzenegger kept the secret for years, recently revealing the truth to his wife, Maria Shriver. The two announced their separation shortly thereafter.
"After leaving the governor's office, I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago," Schwarzenegger said in a statement issued to the newspaper. "I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses, and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.
"I ask that the media respect my wife and children through this extremely difficult time," the statement concluded. "While I deserve your attention and criticism, my family does not."
We guess politicians can take that whole family-values piece out of their political platforms, because clearly they have a different interpretation of what that means. They should just say what it is: family values for you, political values for us. It's always sad to see a family break up, but we are pleased that Shriver didn't take a "politics as usual" approach and stand by her man, particularly in the face of such egregious behavior. Infidelity, "love" children and politicians clearly go hand in hand.
