What happens when your kids grow up and motherhood becomes something unrecognizable? Otherhood, The new film starring Angela Bassett, Felicity Huffman and Patricia Arquette will give a glimpse into the lives of mothers who feel forgotten. The film also stars Jake Hoffman, Jake Lacy, (an oft-shirtless) Sinqua Walls, Heidi Gardner and is directed by Cindy Chupack (Sex and the City). The story breakdown, via Netflix: For empty nesters, what’s the difference between letting your children grow up and letting them grow distant? This year, on Mother’s Day, feeling marginalized and forgotten, longtime friends Carol (Angela Bassett), Gillian (Patricia Arquette) and Helen (Felicity Huffman) decide to drive to New York City to reconnect with their adult sons, and in the process, they realize their sons are not the only ones whose lives need to change. A journey to relate becomes a journey of rediscovery that forces these women to redefine their relationships with their children, friends, spouses and most importantly, themselves. Unlike that trio of sons, we never forget our mamas here at The Root and neither did the artists in our game of “Name That Mom Tune.” From Tupac to The Intruders, we challenged Bassett and Arquette by reciting lyrics of songs for all kinds of mamas, baby mamas, baby mamas’ mamas... Can you guess who took the maternal crown? Otherhood will help you remember to call your mama, too when it drops on Netflix and in select theaters on August 2, 2019.
