In the past, we’ve discussed the unfair stereotype that Black women need to be strong all the time. We can’t let our vulnerability show because that gives the haters power. But we’re only human and no one is unbreakable. For Black women in the spotlight, that balancing act is even harder, because we can see them being torn down in real time. On Saturday, rap superstar Megan Thee Stallion showed her emotions on stage and it actually made her look even tougher.
Fan video from a concert in Tampa, Fla. shows the “Savage” rapper ready to launch into her song “Cobra” when she’s suddenly overcome with emotion and even sheds tears. The enthusiastic crowd cheered her on through the moment and after she composed herself, she continued the performance. The way she allows herself the space to take a moment, then get back to tearing up the stage demonstrates what a badass she really is. And the support of her fans is beautiful.
Obviously, we don’t know what led to the moment, but Meg has been dealing with a lot lately. Over the weekend, AI-generated sex tapes of the Grammy winner made the rounds on the internet. Things gor so bad, the “Body” artist addressed it on X.
“It’s really sick how yall go out of the way to hurt me when you see me winning,” she wrote. “Yall going too far, Fake ass shit. Just know today was your last day playing with me and I mean it.”
Following the recent issues between Marvel star Scarlett Johansson and Open AI, as well as the Taylor Swift deepfake controversy, Meg is just the latest high-profile celebrity to find themselves on the wrong side of AI-generated content.
If you were up in arms, calling for action back in January when this happened to Taylor, please don’t stay silent just because you may not like Megan Thee Stallion’s music. She deserves just as much protection, and we all know we can’t rely on social media platforms to police themselves.
