DJ Unk’s death shocked the hip-hop community over the weekend. But just a couple of days after his passing, we’re finally learning what led to the Atlanta rapper no longer being with us.

On Sunday, Unk’s widow Sherkita Long-Platt shared with TMZ that the “Walk It Out” rapper died in his sleep after suffering a heart attack. Long-Platt and other members of Unk’s family were motivated to share his cause of death after it was rumored that drugs were involved in his death, and they wanted to set the record straight that he didn’t do drugs.

TMZ also reported that a candlelight vigil took place on Sunday at Central Park in Atlanta, Ga.

Unk’s wife was also the one who announced that her husband died in a Facebook post last week. “Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father,” she wrote. “Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.”

His label, Big Oomp Records, also confirmed his death in a post on Instagram Friday, writing, “It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as ‘DJ Unk.’

“DJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label and the imprint that he left globally will be cherished forever,” the post continued. “Hit songs such as ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step’ have left an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire artists, DJs, and fans alike for years to come. His energy, creativity, and commitment to the craft will never be forgotten.”

While he was not as popular or successful as many other Atlanta rappers, Unk will always be a legend in the city. His 2006 debut single, “Walk It Out” was an instant classic in Atlanta and spawned one of the most popular dances of the time.

His second single, “2 Step,” was also released on his debut studio album. “Beat’n Down Yo Block!” was also another hit track that further energized Atlanta’s rap scene at the time.
