The Hate U Give is a soon-to-be released young-adult novel written by Angela Thomas and inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. In 2011 Thomas used Twitter to pitch the idea to a book agent, and the rest is literary history. On Wednesday it was announced that the movie adaptation was sold to Fox 2000, Temple Hill and State Street. And not only that, but Hunger Games star, and activist, Amandla Stenberg was cast as the lead in the film.

Stenberg will portray 16-year-old Starr, who grew up in poverty but attends a suburban prep school. Her life is torn apart when she witnesses police shoot her unarmed best friend.

George Tillman, director of The Longest Ride, Notorious and Barbershop, is set to direct the film.
