Actor Wentworth Miller announced that he is gay, according to a letter written to officials at the St. Petersburg International Film Festival in Russia and obtained by BuzzFeed.

He writes, "I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government."

He went on:

The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.

Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I'll be free to make a different choice.

Miller, who is the son of a black father and a white mother partly of Russian descent, was the star of the television series Prison Break from 2005 to 2009. His performance as Michael Scofield earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Drama.
