Who could forget the adorable story of the young black man in Arizona who mistakenly got a text and showed up to “grandma’s” house last year?
And that when then-17-year-old Jamal Hinton rolled up to Wanda Dench’s home, a tradition was born?
We are happy to report that this year, the pair kept it going, and Hinton even brought along his girlfriend this time.
“It was really nice having everybody here,” Dench told the Arizona Republic. “We got to laugh about last year and reminisce about how it all blew up on our phone and how I had to change my number. We had a laugh and a good time.”
For all of those under a rock, last year, Dench sent out a group text inviting folks to dinner. A wrong number got the message to Hinton, and when he asked who was texting him, Dench replied, “Your grandma.”
The teen asked for a pic, and when Dench sent it, he replied with his own pic, saying, “You not my grandma.” But she invited him, and he came anyway. And the story was social media gold.
Hinton said that he and Dench talk once a week by phone. Even though he has another grandmother—whose house he want to after hers—it’s clear that the two are family. And will be spending lots more Thanksgivings together.
