Looks like Eddie Torres’ (Michael DeLorenzo) so-called return from the dead may not be so smooth. But, there’s still hope.
According to Deadline, ABC has decided to pass on the pilot of popular 1990s cop drama reboot New York Undercover. However, all hope is not lost, since its studio, Universal TV is shopping it around.
It’s upfront season—as in, when TV executives gather to market their upcoming television shows to potential advertisers, in hopes that said marketers purchase commercial slots “up front,” ahead of the show’s season premiere—and the reboot’s studio has high hopes for its shopping potential. In fact, New York Undercover may return to a familiar home.
Writes Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva:
I hear New York Undercover is targeting both broadcast/cable networks and streaming platforms, while Prism’s content is said to be more premium, so it is pursuing SVOD services. All talks are still in flux but I hear New York Undercover‘s original network Fox is likely among the outlets approached.
The show’s original creator, Dick Wolf will be returning for the rebooted pilot, and his executive producing team will include Ben Watkins (Hand of God) and director Anthony Hemingway. Malik Yoba will be reprising his role as J.C. Williams to headline the series, which will take place 20 years later. It’ll be a cop family reunion, as Lauren Velez will also be returning as Nina Moreno, now a retired detective with a prolonged attachment to the unit.
New York Undercover made history as the first police drama in the U.S. to star two people of color.
