Take Rainbow, Tracee Ellis Ross’ eclectic character from Black-ish, but make her a teenage.
That’s the concept behind the popular ABC sitcom’s spinoff prequel, Mixed-ish, which the network just handed out an early series order for, according to The Hollywood Reporter. ABC also confirmed it’s renewing the hit comedy for a sixth season.
Here’s what we know about Mixed-ish so far:
It’s slated to take place in the ’80s, revolving around a teenage Bow (Arica Himmell) as she and her (duh) mixed-race family adjust from living in a hippie commune to life in the suburbs. Tika Sumpter will play Bow’s mother, with Christina Anthony, Mykal-Michelle Harris and Ethan Childress also slated to join the cast.
This effectively completes a Black-ish trifecta, with Grown-ish, the spinoff starring Yara Shahidi, now on its second season on ABC’s cable network, Freeform.
Now is also a good time to revisit what The Root’s beloved Tonja Renée Stidhum wrote back in February, when a possible spin-off was first announced.
Because I love guessing games, I predict the title to be either:
1. Teen-ish
2. Bow-ish
3. Mixed-ish
We’ll check back to see if I called it. Deal? Deal.
Is it only a matter of time before we get a Marsai Martin-centered spinoff—especially after her delightful performance in Little? You know the saying, once you go Black-ish, you...order every conceivable spinoff you can-ish.
