In its latest program, the Ailey II Dance Co. features 38-year veteran Syvia Walters' last season as the company's artistic director before she passes the torch to Associate Artistic Director Troy Powell.
Powell, who started training at the Ailey School at the age of 9, rose through the ranks as a master teacher and resident choreographer before being appointed as the head director of the Company. "It is a privilege to share the gift of Ailey with audiences and to continue delivering on the promise of keeping the company fresh, exciting and soul-stirring — I feel blessed to have this opportunity," Powell said in a press release.
Fans can expect a mix of contemporary and traditional choreography in the 2012 season, which will also stay true to Ailey II's tradition of showcasing the country's best young talent.
Ailey II premieres on April 18 at the Joan Weill Center for Dance in New York City and ends on April 29. Check here for the full program schedule.
