A Black FedEx worker was arrested in Bonifay, Florida following an investigation of several missing packages. Officials with the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office said in a official statement that they reached out to the shipping company for help finding the driver, who was ultimately identified as Latavion Lewis.
Deputies shared that they contacted Lewis, an Alabama native, and he agreed to meet with deputies at the Sheriff’s Office.
Lewis reportedly confessed that due to how late it was, he discarded the undelivered packages at numerous locations instead of simply returning them to the FedEx warehouse.
“Sheriff [John] Tate commends the quick work of HCSO deputies in identifying and apprehending the suspect and thanks to the Bonifay Post Office for their role in locating and delivering the recovered packages,” the sheriff’s office statement read.
FedEx also released a statement. According to PEOPLE, the company corroborated that Lewis no longer is one of their employees.
“This incident is completely unacceptable as the safe and secure transport of our customers’ shipments is our top priority, and we are fully cooperating with authorities in their investigation,” the message read.
“In addition to being charged with criminal offenses, the individual involved is no longer providing service for our company.”
FedEx also said that it is “working to ensure that these packages are delivered to their intended recipients” and that anyone with questions about their shipments can visit their website, reach them by phone or us the FedEx app for package tracking.
In November, FedEx claimed that it was gearing up to process around 16 million packages a day right before the holidays.
Officials stated that 44 of the packages Lewis tossed have been recovered so far and are now at a post office in Bonifay. He was apprehended and charged with organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, and illegal dumping.
