Doris Payne wasn’t on the run but ended up back in jail after missing a court date because of an illness. The 86-year-old jewel thief was scheduled to appear in court earlier this month but was arrested Monday by the DeKalb County (Ga.) Sheriff’s Fugitive Unit.
Over the last 60 years, Payne has stolen about $2 million in jewels, and her most recent theft charge came in December after she was arrested at Atlanta’s Perimeter Mall.
In an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Payne said her health issues include severe pain, balance issues and a lump in her neck.
“It might be cancerous. It may not,” Payne said.
Payne’s notorious life was documented in Netflix’s The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne, which included her going to court over a theft charge in California, beating it, but then confessing to the crime at the end of the documentary.
Payne was arrested at her home in Atlanta and was still being held at the DeKalb County Jail.
