An 8-year-old soccer player from Nebraska is calling foul after her team was disqualified from a tournament because officials said she looked like a boy.

Mili Hernandez likes to wear her hair short because it’s her hair and she can do that. Mili is also an excellent soccer player who’s playing above her age level and is running with the big dogs on the 11-year-old roster with Omaha’s Azzuri Cachorros girls team. But apparently none of that matters to officials at the Springfield Soccer Club girls tournament, Fox8Live reports.

Over the weekend, Mili’s team was axed from the tournament because of her looks, and her family says it’s not fair.

“Just because I look like a boy doesn’t mean I am a boy, but they don’t have a reason to kick out the whole team,” she said.

“They didn’t want to listen,” Cruz Hernandez, Mili’s brother, said. “They said the president had made his decision and there wasn’t any changing that.”

Mili isn’t going to let this bump in the road get her down; she’s keeping her hair short and will find other tournaments to play in.

Her parents can appeal the decision with the Nebraska State Soccer Association.
