Just two weeks after gunfire racked the streets of Chicago over the July Fourth holiday, 22 people were shot and two killed during a 12-hour spate of violence this weekend, ABC News reports.
Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Jose Estrada told ABC News that 22 people were shot between the hours of 3 p.m. Friday and 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Of that number, two were killed and 20 injured, the report says.
Police called the spate of gunfire “unacceptable” and said “there is clearly much more work to be done,” the news station reports.
One of the first victims claimed during the most recent violent weekend was 11-year-old Shamiya Adams, who was shot in the head at a sleepover at a friend’s home on the city’s West Side at about 9:35 p.m. Friday.
Police say Shamiya was in a first-floor bedroom when gunshots pierced the window, originating from an unknown outdoor shooter, the report says. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead, and police are investigating her death as a homicide, police told ABC.
The bloody 12-hour stretch follows a violent July Fourth weekend, when shootings left nine dead and more than 60 injured in Chicago, the report says.
“We will keep building on our strategy, putting more officers on the street in summer months, proactively intervening in gang conflicts, partnering with community leaders,” Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said in a statement, the site says.
