According to authorities, the slaying occurred in Assanah’s girlfriend’s apartment in New York City’s borough of Queens, following an argument over $1,200 in stolen money. Chan was charged with murder Monday, and police continue to search for the other three suspects.

According to the Daily News, the suspects accused Assanah’s girlfriend, Amanda Garaj, of stealing the money and threatened that if it was not returned, they would kill both Assanah and her.

Garaj woke up to the sound of a gunshot Sunday and saw a man holding a gun fleeing with three others, including Chan, authorities say.

Assanah’s aunt Carol Assanah said that he was terrified hours before his death and had left his father a voicemail saying, “I’m scared.”
