(The Root) — New Yorkers young and old are encouraged to add some reading to their weekend and attend the Harlem Book Fair 2012, presented by the Quarterly Black Review. On Saturday, July 21, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture will be the site of the annual literary fair.
With panels, book readings and vendors divided up among the Langston Hughes Auditorium, the Schomburg's courtyard and 135th Street, there will be plenty of ways to stay engaged throughout the day.
There will be programs (pdf) — featuring notable authors like Zane, Sapphire and Cornel West — that cover a host of topics, from "Who Is Failing Whom? Black Males and the American Educational System" and "Black to the Future: Why We No Longer Die First in Science Fiction Movies" to "Young, Gifted and Black: A Discussion on Black Genius" and "A Tribute to Sekou Molefi Baalo."
As part of the Schomburg Center's The End of Anger Summer Reading Series, there will also be a teen-book talk at the Schomburg's American Negro Theatre with author Ellis Cose at 3 p.m. You can sign up at schomburged@nypl.org.
All of the day's programs are free.
