2012 Grammy Nominations: Kanye Snubbed?

OK, "snubbed" is probably too strong a word: With seven nominations, Kanye West leads the pack in the contest for this year's Grammys. But despite selling over a million copies, his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy wasn't mentioned for album of the year (Slate's Forrest Wicknam says the Grammys "pour[ed] cold water" on it), and neither was his Jay-Z collaboration, Watch the Throne.

From Slate:

Kanye received seven nominations in all. Four of those are for his collaboration with Jay-Z, Watch the Throne, which was also left out of the Album of the Year category.

Adele, who won Best New Artist in 2009, made a triumphant return with six nominations, and she and Bruno Mars were nominated in all the major categories: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. Adele's 21 is by far the best-selling album of the year, with more than 4.5 million copies sold, but neither 21 nor any other album this year has received as much acclaim as West's Fantasy.

If there's any lingering award-show tension between West and Taylor Swift, he'll probably get some comfort from the fact that while she's in the running for country album of the year, her Speak Now was also shut out of the categories album of the year, record of the year and song of the year.

The Grammy Awards will be presented Feb. 12 at Staples Center.
