Two brothers are facing murder charges in connection with the shooting death of Nykea Aldridge, the cousin of NBA star Dwyane Wade, ABC13 reports.
Darwin Sorrells Jr., 26, and Derren Sorrells, 22, have both been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the case, which is only the latest to bring Chicago's gun violence under scrutiny.
Aldridge, a mother of four, was pushing a stroller on the city's South Side Friday afternoon when she was hit in the arm and the head after being caught in the crossfire from two men who were exchanging gunfire nearby, the station notes.
She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Police concluded that Aldridge was not the intended target. A relative took custody of the child, who was unharmed in the incident.
As the news station notes, Aldridge's death is not the first time Wade's Chicago family has grappled with gun violence. The NBA star's nephew Darin Johnson was shot twice in the leg in 2012 but recovered.
Both Wade, and his mother, Pastor Jolinda Wade, have addressed the current pain the family is in after the tragic shooting of Aldridge.
"We are now in a very, very sensitive grieving place," Jolinda Wade said, according to ABC13.
Nonetheless, Jolinda Wade said that the family will still be trying to help people like the ones who committed the shooting, with the hope of changing lives.
"We're still going to try and help these people to transform their minds and give them a different direction so this thing won't keep happening," she said. "We're still going to help empower people like the one who senselessly shot my niece in the head."
According to another report by ABC13, the family had planned a Sunday-afternoon vigil for Aldridge at the Willie Mae Morris Empowerment Center in Chicago, which "was developed in part to assist the city of Chicago in their continued efforts to decrease the violence and fatalities by providing a safe haven and high-quality programming for our youth."
The family has also established a trust fund for her four children. According to the news station, donation checks can be made payable to the Nykea Aldrige Children's Fund and mailed to Seaway National Bank, Attn: Daryl Newell, Chief Retail Officer, 645 E. 87th St., Chicago, IL 60619.
