Police officials in Troy, Ala., were investigating an unrelated shooting when they stumbled across a video that appeared to show an alleged gang rape that took place in Panama City, Fla. Alabama officials turned the tape over to Florida law enforcement, and two college students from Alabama's Troy University, Ryan Calhoun and Delonte Martistee, have been arrested and charged with the crime, CNN reports.
Bay County, Fla., Sheriff Frank McKeithen said that the video is probably one of the most "disgusting, repulsive, sickening things" he's seen this year on Panama Beach.
Florida authorities were able to ascertain that the sexual assault took place sometime between March 10 and 12, while the students were on spring break, and it happened behind the Spinnaker Beach Club—a bar and dance club.
Police said that they would not be releasing the victim's name. "We are not releasing her location or any additional information on the victim to protect her from further trauma," Tommy Ford, a spokesman for the Bay County sheriff, said.
Florida officials have interviewed other witnesses and expect to make more arrests.
Troy University released a statement saying that Calhoun and Martistee have been suspended from Troy while the investigation is ongoing: "The students have been placed on temporary suspension from school per the university's standards of conduct and disciplinary procedures.”
