What can we say? The man has range.
Idris Elba is reportedly in final negotiations to join the star-studded film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Cats. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Elba would play Macavity, “a master criminal” of a cat (having owned a cat, I can tell you they’re all potentially master criminals, so I’m not sure what the distinction is here).
Stringer Bell, but make it feline? Color me intrigued.
Already in the Cats movie lineup are Taylor Swift (meh), Jennifer Hudson (oooooh), James Corden (fine) and Ian McKellen (Magneto sings?). Directing the film will be Tom Hooper, who previously directed Les Misérables, The King’s Speech, and The Danish Girl.
If you’re wondering if Elba has musical chops—he does! Well, at least, he’s made songs. Like “Private Garden,” which we think is from 2011, and should definitely not be confused with Quincy Jones’ “The Secret Garden,” a “Sweet Seduction Suite” with an equally foreplay-adjacent concept.
Come for the singing, stay to see Elba get all Bob Ross on a chick.
