In a little over two weeks, I will turn 43. It’s a fairly unremarkable age—except for the remarkable (to me) work I now get to do every day here at The Glow Up. But even as I try to settle into my middle-aged idiosyncrasies (and metabolism), most days I still feel like a 27-year-old just dying to get out and run the streets. After all, I was just 27 yesterday. (No, really. It feels like it was just yesterday.)
So maybe it’s fitting that I’ve never lost my love for glitter—or anything that sparkles, for that matter. (For real: I’m your friend who will literally stop short and say, “Ooh! Something sparkly!”) Having made that confession, I’m sure you’ll also understand that it took pretty much every ounce of restraint I had in 2016 not to buy ALL of the Lust 004 glitter lip kits launched by the self-anointed “Mother” of makeup, Pat McGrath.
In fact, I didn’t buy any of them—after all, what did a then (super-mature) 41-year-old need with glitter-covered lips? At 43, I can tell you: She needs a second chance, because you only live once (or only once in this glitter-loving body, depending on what you believe in).
So when I heard that as of yesterday, the Lust 004 Everything Kit was back (at a discount!) on McGrath’s site, I realized that this was my chance to shine—literally. After all, how could I resist?
OK, that’s not me in the video (I wish). But as reported by The Cut:
The Lust 004 line includes lip-kit singles that come in shades of deep red wine, blackish purple, and two nude shades. They also come with matching glitter pots filled with micro-fine flecks to dab on top of the lipstick for multidimensional shimmer. If deciding on one single shade is too much commitment — it can be since there’s no telling when Mother will bring them back — then the mid-range lip kit bundles, which include two of the lipstick shades, a clear gloss, and two glitter pots, might be the safest choice. One bundle is called Flesh and has the two nude shades, while the Bloodwine bundle includes the two deep red and purple shades. The third bundle, Vermillion Venom, looks like a brighter, more vibrant Bloodwine kit.
Umm ... yeah. Give me all of the things. I don’t care if it’s age-appropriate. In fact, I can’t think of anything more age-appropriate, because if experience doesn’t earn you anything else, it should earn you the right to shine.
Or, at least, the right to splurge. It’s my birthday, dammit.
