I don’t know what it means when the United Nations doesn’t fuck with you, but this is the America we live in. The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly Thursday to condemn President Donald Trump’s rushed decision to claim that Jerusalem is now the capital of Israel and that he was moving the U.S. Embassy there.
One hundred and twenty-eight member states voted against Trump’s plan and 35 countries abstained even after U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley threatened countries that the United States “will remember” those who choose not to vote in favor of the move.
“The United States is by far the single largest contributor to the United Nations,” she said before the vote, adding that “our participation in the U.N. produces great good for the world,” ABC News reports.
Then, in case that threat wasn’t thinly veiled enough, Haley continued:
We do this because it represents who we are... when we make generous contributions to the U.N. we also have a legitimate expectation that our goodwill is recognized. If our investment fails, we have an obligation to spend our resources in more productive ways.
And for good measure, Haley added, “The United States will remember this day” on which it was “singled out for attack.”
“America will put our embassy in Jerusalem,” Haley said, adding that “no vote in the United Nations will make any difference on that. But this vote will make a difference on how Americans look on the U.N.”
And then she threw her scarf around her neck, gathered her papers and stormed off.
This is the America that we live in now—an America that threatens member states of the U.N. Basically, the United States has become Tommy from Goodfellas.
