The other day, I got into a discussion with one of my good friends about songs that just have to go on a “knocking boots” playlist. Sex, after all, is as much aural as it is physical, and in addition to the sounds the two of you make for each other, nothing pleases the ear more—and gets those bodies moving in sync better—than the right musical playlist.
We debated back and forth and decided that while there may not be one definite playlist per se, there are definitely songs that cannot—and should not—be overlooked when you’re making your list.
I have put together for you—in no particular order—a list of 10 of my favorites.
1. “Meeting in My Bedroom,” by Silk
I’ve said on Twitter plenty of times that this song is made for body rolls. Get your bodies rolling together to this five-part harmony as these dudes sing in strong falsettos in time to the meeting in your bedroom.
2. “Scandalous,” by Prince
Prince was so nasty back in his day. This song in an ode to lovemaking. It’s a lovemaking anthem, if you will. Prince was a genius at instrumentation, and the orchestration in this song lends itself well to a long, slow grinding of pelvises.
3. “Lick,” by Joi
True story: I once had a lover go down on me to this song, and he timed the actions of his tongue to the rhythm of Joi’s singing; and because of that, this song has been on every one of my juking playlists ever since. Enough said.
4. “Let’s Get It On,” by Marvin Gaye
As if I have to explain this one to you.
5. “Pony,” by Ginuwine
Every grind-time playlist should have at least one up-tempo song on it to encourage faster movements, and for me, this one is it. It is no wonder this song was a stripper favorite in its glory days. It was made for sexual moves on the pole.
You see what I did there.
6. “Freak Me,” by Silk
The song literally says, “Let me lick you up and down till you say stop. Let me play with your body, baby, make you real hot. Let me do all the things you want me to do. ’Cause tonight, baby, I want to get freaky with you.” It is an invitation to a night of sweet, sticky love. And once again, that five-part harmony is a big part of it.
7. “Lady Cab Driver,” by Prince
Prince has so many songs that can go on a sexy playlist, and this one might not be the first one you think of when it comes to that, but trust me. It’s another up-tempo beauty with just enough sensuality to make it a good pick.
8. “Fuck You,” by Dr. Dre, Featuring Devin, aka the Dude, and Snoop Dogg
I don’t know about you, but I like a little thug with my sex. This song has all the thug you need, set to a gangsta but sexually evocative beat. As the title warns, the lyrics are quite literally about having sex. It is made for a ittle gangsta grooving.
9. “Inside My Love,” by Minnie Riperton
I have been riding hide for this song ever since I realized that Riperton is inviting a new lover to come skeet inside her. I know we aren’t used to referring to her in that manner, but if you listen to the lyrics—that is exactly what she’s singing about. Nonetheless, it’s a beautiful song, the music is lovely and it lends itself well to the activity at hand.
10. “Butterflies,” by Michael Jackson
This song is so beautiful. It is off of Jackson’s 2001 album, Invincible, but every time I hear it, it gives me Off the Wall vibes. His voice is strong, and he gives us just enough falsetto to make us a tad bit emotional. I love this song, and I love being loved to it.
Bonus Track: “’Til Tomorrow,” by Marvin Gaye
Although they pushed “Sexual Healing” as the lead song on the Midnight Love album, it really should have been this. Gaye did some of his best begging on this jam.
So there you have. A good starter list of songs to add to a grooving playlist. I’m sure there are plenty of others out there. You may have some favorites of your own. Let me hear them in the comments.
