Asa Robert, 20, was found guilty of rape and other charges Monday for the brutal attack of an 82-year-old widow that left the victim having to use a wheelchair, the New York Daily News reports.
Robert now faces up to 122 years in prison on charges of rape, criminal sex act, burglary, robbery and criminal trespass.
“This defendant committed a reprehensible and terrifying assault on a vulnerable elderly woman who had the courage to face her attacker in court. This defendant has now been brought to justice and held accountable for his actions,” acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said, according to the Daily News.
Robert broke into the woman's home in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, N.Y., in July 2015. According to the New York Post, the elderly woman did not realize that Robert was in her home until she discovered him in the corner of her bedroom rocking back and forth when she was about to go to bed.
According to the Post, the widow offered to give Robert a Hawaiian shirt that she had purchased for her late husband, telling Robert, "You look very nice," and hoping that Robert would not hurt her. However, as he walked toward the front door after looting the home, he turned back and ordered her to "get back in the bedroom."
Robert then tied up the woman and raped her for four hours, ordering her not to call the police, the Daily News reports.
Robert is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 10.
